In The Zone

Question: Do you believe that heightened focus (i.e. being in the zone) is the secret to happiness?

Answer: I think it depends on what we focus on, where that “zone” is.

We often hear from successful sportsman (Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Roger Federer, etc) how they “entered the zone” with their unique focusing ability, controlling everything around them, winning. And I am sure it is the same with famous entertainers, business man, artists, leaders.

Such an individual focus can lead to personal success, happiness. But we also know that this personal success, happiness is temporary, superficial, acting like a drug with withdrawal, rebound effects.

True happiness is a collective emotional impression coming from positive, mutually supportive, mutually fulfilling relationships. In this case the “zone” we need to focus on is not our own success, winning, our own personal happiness, but the success and happiness of the others.

This focus can bring infinite, eternal joy, happiness and fulfilment if practiced in a mutual, reciprocal manner in a closed human environment (which can later encompass the whole of Humanity).
