Question: Is there something you’ve changed about yourself that makes other people happy but not you?
Answer: This is a very important question as it goes deep into what we are expected to do!
We are all born with an inherently self-serving, self-justifying nature. We can do calculations only for our own sake by default. This is why our world is built on ruthless, exclusive competition, fight for resources and survival, where we all succeed at the expense of others.
As it turns out – and the deepening, global crisis proves it very sharply – we will not be able to solve problems and survive in a globally integrated, interdependent world with our instinctive, “cancer-like” nature. We will consume each other and ourselves.
Thus we will have to change ourselves, our inherent, instinctive relation, attitude towards others. We will have to learn how to rise above ourselves, and start making calculations for the sake of others, for the sake of the whole collective above and against selfish calculations.
We have to build a global society that is built upon “mutual guarantee” that is expressed by the fundamental, archaic principle of “love others as yourself” – which in fact means “loving others MORE than oneself”!
Our inherent nature will not disappear, thus for our own egoistic self this expected new paradigm is very unpleasant! Living for others, serving others unconditionally is like torture, death for our inherent ego! But it is good for others, and it safeguards the survival of the whole collective. Thus despite our ego suffering, complaining this way we also secure our own survival, since in our world the “one for all, all for one” law operates with full force!
This schizophrenic – my egoistic self suffering while we are all surviving – initial state will correct itself as soon as we establish the working mutual guarantee and we reach true, mutual trust. When we start feeling that although we live for, serve others unconditionally – and our ego protests this – the others behave the same way towards me, fulfilling my needs perfectly, even our inherent nature will see and accept that this state is a qualitatively higher existence than the previous, warring, individual life!
