Question: How can you regret something you didn’t do if you can’t possibly know the outcome?
Answer: You are completely right. Regret makes sense only when we are in full control, we know exactly the choices in front of us, we have a reasonable expectations about the outcome and then despite of all the evaluations, discernments we make the wrong choice.
And we are never in such a situation, thus regret is one of the most wasteful, futile thing we can do.
We exist in a completely integrated, totally interdependent, closed Natural system that is operating based on “iron” laws, intelligent cause and effect processes, a single developmental plan driving the whole system with all of its elements – including us – towards a most optimal, final, balanced state.
Our only free choice relates to studying, understanding the system and its developmental plan, in order to understand that final, most optimal, balanced state and how we can “partner” the system in order to achieve it.
Thus the only time we can feel regret is when we received the chance, the ability to start researching the system and our own role in its plan – through the question about the “meaning of life” – and we ignore, reject that invitation.
